They reduce the sound level of a shot and thus minimise its environmental impact.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But how effective a silencer actually is depends on a number of physical, technical and practical factors.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The<strong> Maximum attenuation power in decibels (dB)<\/strong> is often considered a key feature of a silencer.<\/p>\n<p>However, these figures should be evaluated with caution, as they do not always reflect the actual conditions and results in practice. In this article we <strong>a look at the possibilities and limits of damping performance<\/strong> and explain why the dB figures should be critically scrutinised.<\/p>\n<div class=\"row\"  id=\"row-1694841498\">\n\n\t<div id=\"col-1433413080\" class=\"col medium-8 small-12 large-8\"  >\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"col-inner\"  >\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n<h3>The attenuation performance of a silencer: possibilities<\/h3>\n<p>A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schalld%C3%A4mpfer_(Waffe)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener sponsored\">Suppressor<\/a> works on the principle of reducing the sound energy generated by the shot,<\/strong> by slowing down, cooling and partially redirecting the expanding gases. These limits should be taken into account in order to set realistic expectations.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Residual sound remains<br \/>\n<\/strong>A silencer can reduce the sound level, but not eliminate it completely. If the user deviates from this, the actual damping performance can be significantly different.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Marketing strategies:<\/strong><br \/>\nManufacturers tend to present the best possible values that are achieved under idealised conditions. These figures are often not representative in practice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Subjective perception:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe decibel scale is logarithmic, and a reduction of 30 dB, for example, does not mean that the shot appears three times quieter.
