Tuning the Bergara BA13 Take Down: Precision and durability with 550 g trigger tuning and Cerakote coating | Part 2

Part 1 Report Bergara Tuning Spartan bipod

The Bergara BA13 Take Down is a compact, accurate and versatile break-action rifle that is ideal for both hunting and sport shooting. With its simple, robust design and reliability, it is a popular choice for many users.

However, as with many high-quality weapons, the Targeted tuning measures still get more out of the Bergara BA13.

The gun has been in our house before for Installation of a Spartan socket for the inclusion of a bipod.

In response to a special customer request, we have developed the BA13 in a completely revised in a second step.

The trigger was completely dismantled and reworked, all steel parts Ceracote coated and the black synthetic stock also finished with a Cerakote design.

A special feature and of course a motivation for our creative team: the customer had given us a free hand with the design.

In this article, we present two crucial optimisations:

  • the Reduction of the high trigger weight from approx. 1.2 kg to 550 g and
  • the application of a Cerakote complete coating for permanent rust protection, including a Cerakote camo design coating of the plastic shaft.

We explain the technical background, the advantages and how these improvements enhance the gun for demanding users.

Bergara BA13 Take Down Reduce trigger weight from approx. 1.2 kg to 550 g

Why is the trigger weight important?

The Trigger weight has a direct influence on precision of a weapon when firing. By default, the Bergara BA13 a relatively high trigger weight of about 1.2 kg (presumably due to USA laws).

This is acceptable for many applications, but a lower trigger pull weight can be a considerable improvement, especially when shooting at longer distances or for precision work. European hunters generally prefer lower trigger weights.

A lighter triggerThe use of a higher weight, such as 550 g, means that less force is required to trigger the shot. This reduces the likelihood of the shooter unconsciously applying too much pressure to the gun, which could affect accuracy. This is a particular advantage for a lightweight break-action rifle such as the Bergara BA13, which is sensitive to movement.

To this end, the Complete trigger unit from our experienced gunsmith Noah completely disassembled into all individual parts. This was important because our customer wanted a complete Cerakote coating for long-lasting corrosion protection and not just the barrel and system box.

Advantages of trigger tuning

  1. Improved precision: Less effort when pulling the trigger ensures that the weapon is held steady. This is particularly important when hunting game or when shooting at long distances.
  2. Faster response times: A smooth trigger makes it easier to pull the trigger precisely at the crucial second.
  3. Less fatigue: During longer shooting sessions, for example at the shooting range or on hunting trips lasting several hours, the finger is less stressed, which maintains concentration. Here now rather secondary.

Safety aspects of tuning

ATrain tuning requires precision and expertise. It is crucial that the trigger releases reliably despite the lower weight and that no unintentional shots are fired. The work should therefore be carried out by an experienced gunsmith who will ensure that the mechanics of the gun remain perfectly adjusted.

Cerakote coating: protection and style for the Bergara BA13

The weakness of conventional bluing

Most Bergara BA13 models are finished with a standard black oxide coating to protect the metal from corrosion. However, this protective coating is limited and particularly susceptible to high humidity, rain or other weather influences. If you know that break-barrel guns are often used in the mountains, this is an issue with rapidly changing weather.

Hunters in particular, who are often out in the countryside, know how quickly bluing can rust if it is not perfectly maintained.

Cerakote: The high-tech protection for weapons

Cerakote is a modern, ceramic coatingwhich was specially developed for use on weapons and other metal surfaces. It offers superior protective properties against corrosion, abrasion and weathering. At the same time, Cerakote enables visual customisation through a variety of colours and patterns.

The advantages of the Cerakote coating

  1. Long-lasting corrosion protectionCerakote forms an impermeable barrier against moisture and prevents rust formation, even in extreme weather conditions.
  2. Resistance to abrasionThe coating protects the metal from scratches and mechanical damage that often occur in everyday hunting.
  3. Thermal stabilityCerakote can withstand high temperatures without discolouring or loosening, which is particularly advantageous for intensive use.
  4. Wide range of colours and designsFrom classic matt colours to striking camouflage patterns, Cerakote offers almost unlimited design possibilities.
  5. Easy to cleanIn contrast to bluing, a Cerakote-coated firearm requires significantly less maintenance to remain in perfect condition.

Complete coating of the Bergara BA13 with Cerakote for perfect rust protection

Which parts of the Bergara weapon were coated?

With a complete Cerakote coating all metal parts of the weapon are treated, including

  • The run
  • The fastener
  • The fume cupboard unit
  • The system box

This guarantees that all vulnerable areas of the gun are permanently protected against rust and wear.

Colour selection and customisation

Cerakote is available in a wide range of colours, including

  • Matt blackFor a discreet, classic look.
  • Flat Dark Earth (FDE)An earthy colour that is very popular with modern hunting rifles.
  • Olive greenPerfect for hunting in wooded areas.
  • Shades of grey or camouflage patternsFor a unique look and maximum camouflage.

Due to the overall design of the BA13 Take Down rifle, we opted for gradient colours for the steel - the trigger blade was even chosen in red.

Cerakote-Camo coating on the plastic shaft

In addition to the metal parts, the black plastic stock of the Bergara BA13 has also been finished with Cerakote. A particularly attractive feature here is the option of applying a camouflage pattern (camo) that integrates the weapon perfectly into its surroundings. In our case, a "Leaf design" without military context chosen because the weapon is mainly used on the Mountain hunting used becomes.

How is the Cerakote-Camo coating applied?

The process comprises several steps:

  1. Cleaning and preparationThe plastic shaft is cleaned and prepared with a primer.
  2. Base colourA base colour is applied, which forms the basis for the camouflage pattern.
  3. Stencil technique: The desired pattern is created using stencils or freehand techniques.
  4. Fixing in the ovenThe coating is heated to ensure its durability and resistance.

Advantages of the camo coating

  • Improved camouflageThe camouflage design makes the weapon almost invisible in natural environments.
  • Additional protectionThe Cerakote layer also makes the shaft more resistant to scratches and moisture.
  • Visual enhancementA customised stock gives the gun a professional, high-quality look.

Advantages when hunting in all weather conditions

The combination of trigger tuning and Cerakote coating makes the Bergara BA13 Take Down a perfect weapon for hunting, regardless of the weather conditions.

  • Maximum precision in any weather
The reduced trigger weight enables more precise shots, even if the shooter is wearing gloves or the fingers are less sensitive due to the cold. This is particularly important when hunting in winter or in adverse conditions.
  • Stainless use even in the rain
Thanks to the Cerakote coating, the gun remains rust-free even in rain or high humidity. This not only increases the service life of the weapon, but also gives the hunter the certainty that the weapon is always ready for use.
  • Robustness in the wilderness
The Cerakote coating protects the weapon from the stresses and strains of hunting in the wild, such as knocks, scratches or contact with dirt and plants.

Summary: The perfect combination of precision and durability with the tuned BERGARA BA13 Take Down

The tuning of the Bergara BA13 Take Down by reducing the trigger weight and the Cerakote coating raises the gun to a new level. The advantages at a glance:

  • Trigger tuningReduced trigger pull weight for better precision and less fatigue.
  • Cerakote coatingComprehensive protection against rust, wear and weathering.
  • Camo coatingCamouflage and aesthetics for an appealing look and optimum hunting success.

These measures make the Bergara BA13 not only a visually impressive weapon, but also a reliable companion for anyone who hunts or shoots in demanding conditions.
